Member Profile
I am a visual artist and climate activist whose art critiques consumer culture. I created Climate Toothpaste in 2016 to help climate groups with outreach and volunteer recruitment.
Climate Toothpaste educates about the climate movement. It connects people who care but are not active on climate change, to climate groups that need help. It’s not toothpaste (sorry!) It’s an art object. The box is covered with information about climate change. Inside is a letter about local climate groups, and tips to lower your carbon footprint.
I became a climate activist when I went to the Earth Day march in 2014 in Portland OR and thought, Where are all the people? This is Portland! This is the word's biggest problem! I first joined Citizens Climate Lobby, did a couple fundraisers for them, and started working with Oregon Climate and CarbonWA, two state-based carbon pricing groups.
I have had solo shows at Roebling Hall Gallery in New York, Agnew’s Gallery in London, two galleries in Portland, and had a 2009 retrospective at the Acadiana Center for the Arts in Lafayette, LA, in a colossal space. I was in the seminal 2004 show “Open House: Working in Brooklyn,” at the Brooklyn Museum, and showed in “Illegal Art: Freedom of Expression in the Corporate Age,” which traveled around the U.S.
My work has been written up in Adbusters, Advertising Age, Art in America, The New York Times, Flash Art, The Chicago Tribune, Wired, Playboy, and Salon.com, and in textbooks ranging from Introduction to Psychology, to Designing Brand Identities, to Preble’s Artforms.
I am based right outside Portland OR, in Vancouver WA. It's on the "Thin Green Line," where fossil fuel infrastructure proposals on the Columbia river are a constant battle.
